Tirupur: A non-governmental organization has come forward to maintain a graveyard at Kumarananthapuram on Perumanallur Road in the city after the corporation failed to look after it. This follows a report in TOI, ‘Residents decry poor unkeep of decades-old graveyard’, on October 30, 2018.The burial ground was widely used by the people in northern part of the dollar city for many years. But its patronage declined after two electrical crematoriums came into existence. But still many families prefer it. However, the burial ground, which earlier spread over three acres, was shrunk to half of its size after the corporation started constructing public toilet and children home there, and the Tamil Nadu water supply took some land to build an overhead water tank.Even the remaining area of the graveyard was in mess as it was covered with bushes and thorns, and large part of it was used by the Twad to dump underground concrete water pipes. It was causing inconvenience to the families who brought bodies for the last rites.“We got the information about the situation and we deployed earthmovers and removed the bushes. We wanted to ensure that the people start using the burial ground. We also have planned to put a watchman to man the facility,” A Arumugam, president of Rotary Club, Lakshmi Nagar, said.“The people were vexed with poor maintenance and the shrinking space. But now, it is good that the NGO has come forward to restore the facility,” S Rajendran, a CPM functionary said. However, the Twad is yet to remove the pipes. Rajendran urged it to remove the pipes immediately.
