Coimbatore: After pledging and selling most of his belongings to pay interest for a small amount he had borrowed over a year ago, a 40-year-old Podanur resident on Monday sought the help of the police commissioner, seeking protection from the usurer.In his complaint, Nixon Salin, who was running a firm that produced peanut burfi, said he had paid over Rs 6lakh as interest for Rs 50,000 he had borrowed from the usurera neighbour who is a moneylender by professionin 2017. “But he is demanding another Rs 7 lakh. I have nothing more to sell or pledge.”“I had borrowed the Rs 50,000 to give Diwali bonus to my employees as I fell short of money. I had promised to return it within 10 days. But due to some unfortunate situation, I couldn’t repay the amount within the agreed time. On the 40th day, the usurer claimed that I had to repay Rs 93,000, including the interest. As I could not immediately repay the amount, he gave me another Rs 7,000 and got my signature on an empty paper,” the complainant said.“Since then, I have been paying interest for Rs 1lakh, which the usurer is considering as my loan amount. I had paid about Rs 60,000 as interest for every single miss for more than one year,” Salin said.“I sold all the jewellery and vehicles to pay the interest amount and had to shut down the company.
