Govt staff, teachers to stage protest

Coimbatore: Members of government teachers associations and government employees associations will come together at the collectorate here on Friday evening under the Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organization - Government Employees Organisation (Jacto-Geo) to press for their long-standing demands regarding the scrapping of the complementary pension scheme and payment of 21-month arrear pay under the seventh pay commission.District president of the Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Graduate Teachers Association T Arulanandam said the protest was a preview for the indefinite strike from January 22 announced by Jacto-Geo. “The associations, which had parted ways with Jacto-Geo in 2016, have also come together for the protest and the following indefinite strike. While the main focus of the protest will be the demands regarding the pension scheme and arrear payments, over the past 20 days, new issues have arisen. For instance, secondary teachers have been asked to teach LKG and UKG students without proper official communication. The teachers feel this is a kind of de-promotion for them. Also, the state has decided to merge about 3,500 anganwadis with elementary and higher secondary schools. This will in effect do away with the jobs of workers at 3,500 anganwadis,” he said.
