Tirupur: The district child protection unit and social welfare department have launched an investigation after a 14-year-old girl, who was married off to a 22-year-old man , delivered a baby in the Tirupur Government Hospital on Monday.Though the mother and newborn were doing well and were expected to be discharged on Thursday, the hospital administration prolonged their stay for further monitoring.The child marriage victim’s parents hailed from Madurai. The family had migrated to Tirupur six years ago. The parents were working in a copra drying unit at Kangeyam while the girl was attending a nearby government school. After completing class VIII, she stopped going to the school and started working in the unit with the parents. She was married to her relative, who was also working in the unit, last April. Three months ago, all of them moved to another copra drying unit in Uthukuli.“We, along with the social welfare department, is conducting inquiry. The man who married her, also a school dropout, may attract charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, prohibition of child marriage act and justice juvenile act,” said D Vasanth Kumar, Tirupur district child protection officer.
