Coimbatore: A college student and a Tasmac shop employee were killed in two separate accidents in the city in a matter of hours.In the first incident, M Balu, 52, of Sivaganga district, was ran over by a government bus at Singnallur bus stand on Monday night. The deceased was identified as M Akilan, of Thanjavur district. They also registered a case and arrested bus driver M Marimuthu, 39, of Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district. He was employed with a Tasmac outlet at Keeranatham. According to the traffic investigation wing (TIW-east) police, the incident took place at 11.30pm when he was waiting for bus to his hometown at the bus stand.“A Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) mofussil bus, which plies between Mettupalayam and Aruppukkottai, hit Balu, who fell down and came under its wheels, as it entered the bus stand. He died on the spot,” an officer said.When alerted, TIW-east police sent the body to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for postmortem and seized the TNSTC bus. They also registered a case and arrested bus driver M Marimuthu, 39, of Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district. He was later let off on bail.After the postmortem, the body was handed over to the family members on Tuesday afternoon.Hours after the first incident, a 19-year-old college student was killed and another injured after they fell down from a bike on Ukkadam Periyakulam bund. The deceased was identified as M Akilan, of Thanjavur district. He was a second-year engineering student of a private college at Othakkalmandapam.Police said the incident took place at 2.30 am on Tuesday when Akilan and his friend S Ambeesh, 19, of Madurai, were heading to the city on a motorcycle. “Akilan was speeding the motorcycle and he lost control over the vehicle and fell on road. He suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. Ambeesh, who was riding pillion, escaped with fractures,” a police officer said.When alerted, TIW-west police sent the body to the CMCH for postmortem. Further investigation is on.
