Coimbatore: A day after Sree Narayana Guru College at KG Chavadi on the outskirts of the city sacked an assistant professor for mentally harassing girl students, students boycotted their classes and staged a protest on the college campus on Wednesday, saying the inquiry wasn’t done in a transparent manner and they don’t have any proof that the management has terminated the faculty member in question.“On Saturday, the assistant professor had called the students to discuss their mini project. When they went to his room, he verbally abused them,” said a student, who participated in the protest.Pointing out that a guide would be appointed to assist the students doing mini projects, the student said, M Manikanadan, assistant professor, biotechnology department, was one such guide.“It’s not the first instance of him behaving in such a way with the girl students. He had mentally harassed senior students as well, but so far no complaints have been lodged against him,” said another student. “We didn’t want such incidents to occur anymore inside the campus. So, we brought it to the management’s attention. However, they asked to drop the issue as it was not a big matter.”The student said they took out the protest to condemn the management’s bid to silence the issue. “We want the management to conduct a transparent inquiry and show us proof that the professor has been terminated.”When contacted, college principal M Ilangovan said they had conducted an inquiry soon after they received the complaint from the students and terminated the assistant professor in question from the college.
