Coimbatore: Tales of overflowing garbage bins and stench emanating from accumulated waste have become common at several places across the city.At Bharathi Colony, garbage bins are cleaned only once in a week. Residents dump their domestic wastes only at the overflowing bins.“As the sanitary workers clean the bins only once in a week, wastes are found strewn on to the road and dragged by vehicles for few meters,” S Parvathi, a resident of Bharathi Colony, said. She said for the past seven months, door-to-door waste collection was not taking place at her colony and the residents have no option but to dispose the wastes at garbage bins.Stating that the bins were last cleared on Saturday, she said as the days pass, they would not even able to walk on the roads without covering their nose.Similar condition prevails at Krishna Colony as well. “On one side, corporation officials have been insisting us to segregate domestic wastes, but on the other hand, the sanitary workers do not visit our house to collect the segregated wastes. We had stopped segregating wastes as sanitary workers are not collecting them,” K Geetha, a resident, said. She said they cannot store wet wastes at their house for more than a day as the entire house stinks.Another resident R Mani said the sanitary workers have been cleaning the bins once in 10 days and by the time, accumulated wastes would occupy quarter of the road, thus causing traffic congestions.R Raveendran from Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore said the situation is same across the city. It is mainly due to lack of sufficient number of pushcarts, lorries and manpower, he said.He said it is impossible to clean all the bins on daily basis with the existing number of vehicles. He said the number of vehicles should be increased at least by 30% to meet the need of the city. When contacted, corporation officials said that the garbage bins were cleaned daily.
