Rs 16.35L & 170 liquor bottles seized in a day

Various squads have seized Rs 83.14 lakh and 866 liquor bottles from several places across the district in the past 10 days.While the seized amount exceeding Rs 50,000 is handed over to treasuries, amount exceeding Rs 10 lakh is handed over to the income tax (IT) department. Coimbatore: Election flying squad and surveillance teams seized a total of Rs 16.35 lakh from six people, who failed to produce valid documents for the amount they were carrying, and 170 liquor bottles from another three across the district on Thursday.While flying squads struck at Valparai, Pollachi, Singanallur and Coimbatore South, static surveillance teams made the seizures at Mettupalayam, Singanallur and Thondamuttur. Liquor bottles were seized from three people at Pollachi.In one incident, the election flying squad seized Rs 7.21lakh from a man at Gandhipuram on Thursday after he failed to show the source of money.The squad headed by block development officer J Sheela seized the money from a four-wheeler owned by R Mano and handed it over to the officials at the sub-treasury office.Thirty flying squads, as many static surveillance teams and 20 video surveillance teams are keeping a watch on movement of unaccounted money after the model code of conduct came into effect ahead of the Lok Sabha election.
