More independents enter the fray in Pollachi, Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Two independent candidates filled nominations for the Coimbatore and Pollachi parliamentary constituencies on Thursday, on the third day for filling papers to contest the Lok Sabha elections. While 69-year-old K Ramasamy, of Kuniyamuthur, would contest from Pollachi parliamentary constituency, Palanisamy Raj, of Punjai Puliampatti in Erode, would put up a fight in Coimbatore. He is the second independent candidate to file papers in Coimbatore constituency. He has bagged the best citizen award, Abdul Kalam award and Mahatma Gandhi award in recognition for his social works. So, I decided to contest as an independent candidate,” Ramasamy said.

Both are not new to the election battle. While it’s Ramasamy’s sixth outing, it’s third one for Palanisamy.Ramasamy, who does electrical repair works, is a farmer by profession. He has been contesting elections since 1996. “Governments are always formed by political parties in Independent India. So, I decided to contest as an independent candidate,” Ramasamy said. He is the second independent candidate to file papers in Pollachi constituency.Palanisamy Raj, who had earlier contested the assembly election at Gobichettipalayam and parliamentary election in Tirupur, has many awards in his kitty. He has bagged the best citizen award, Abdul Kalam award and Mahatma Gandhi award in recognition for his social works. He was agriculture co-operative society secretary for 39 years. “None of the politicians have taken any step for the welfare of the society. The judicial system is also left to suffer as many posts of judge continue to remain vacant. So, I have filed the papers to contest the poll,” Palanisamy Raj said. He is the second independent candidate to file papers in Coimbatore constituency. tnn
