Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) vice-chancellor N Kumar on Friday advised scientists from 15 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to promote more varieties of millets, forage crops and agro forestry among farmers “I would advice addition and display of millets, forages and agro forestry crops among every KVK’s crop cafeteria,” Kumar said while lauding the KVK’s front line activities at the annual meeting.These crops require less irrigation and can survive with other inputs, he said. “I have visited at least five KVKs in the recent past and received good feedback from the farmers in the region.”Director of the ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute YG Prasad said the KVKs’ planning should be farmer-centric and led by technology. “They should display high-value crops because they interest farmers and are already involved in large-scale awareness of central government-related policies in agriculture. KVKs in the last one year have performed 4,000 demonstrations, 185 technical demonstrations and involved 50,000 farmers,” he said.
