Peelamedu-Sowripalayam Rd a nightmare for motorists

  • | Sunday | 24th March, 2019

“Ideally, the corporation should have done at least patch work after the UGD work, but it wasn’t done. Today, the stretch is any motorist’s nightmare and the vehicular movement has dropped by more than 80%,” A Maheswari, a fruit seller on the road, said. “Corporation workers had poured concrete on the road three months ago and now the stretch is full of coarse aggregate. “Corporation workers sprinkle water on the stretch once in two weeks, but it’s hardly a solution. Motorists falling down at the bends is a common sight nowadays.”A Rajakumar, another shopkeeper, complained about dust menace in the area.

Coimbatore: Dug up almost three years ago to lay pipelines for the underground drainage (UGD) project, the city corporation is yet to relay Peelamedu-Sowripalayam Road, making the 2km stretch hardly motorable.Public transportation services on the stretch have come to almost a standstill, leaving members of more than 1,000 families in the locality to walk for kilometres to catch a bus. Despite having a couple of bus stands on the stretch, the civic body has hardly done anything to restore public transportation services on the stretch by repairing the road.“It was one of the finest roads in the city. Today, the stretch is any motorist’s nightmare and the vehicular movement has dropped by more than 80%,” A Maheswari, a fruit seller on the road, said. “Corporation workers had poured concrete on the road three months ago and now the stretch is full of coarse aggregate. My business has also affected as commuters are taking alternate routes.”F Shawn Michael, a commuter, said it was extremely difficult to ride even two-wheelers on the stretch. “There are a few bends and negotiating them has become too difficult due to the bad condition of the road. Motorists falling down at the bends is a common sight nowadays.”A Rajakumar, another shopkeeper, complained about dust menace in the area. “Corporation workers sprinkle water on the stretch once in two weeks, but it’s hardly a solution. We have been requesting them to relay the road, but to no avail.”City-based activist S P Thiyagarajan, meanwhile, said the city corporation was indifferent to the woes of residents and commuters. “Ideally, the corporation should have done at least patch work after the UGD work, but it wasn’t done. And when they decided to relay the road recently, they left it halfway after laying concrete.”When contacted, corporation officials assured to look into the issue and said steps would be taken to relay the road at the earliest.
