Govt hospital to get new burns ward

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is all set to be equipped with a new burns ward.The ward, which will come up in place of the old trauma and emergency ward, will house both acute and chronic burn units. It will have a more sterile environment that ensures lower infection rate.CMCH officials confirmed that they have received funds worth Rs 6.17crore to construct the new burns cum TAEI (Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care initiative). “It will come up in the place of the old trauma and dental wards and extend up until the old orthopedic outpatient ward. The work to demolish the existing buildings will start soon,” hospital dean B Ashokan told TOI.The new building will have three floors. “Each floor will be 1,000sqft. While the burns ward and TAEI wards would occupy a floor each, the third floor will be dedicated exclusively for master health check-ups,” said Ashokan. “We expect the final project cost including interiors and equipment to touch Rs 9crore, but the government has requested us to start work with the funds given and assured us of the rest of the funds as the project goes forward.”The burns ward, which has been sanctioned under the National Programme on Prevention and Management of Burn injuries, will have 17 beds in total. “The existing burns ward has about 13 beds and mainly treats acute burn injuries. Chronic burn injuries are often treated and operated with other patients. The new facility will be prone to lesser infections and be more sterile, because other patients will be kept out. It will be set up according to the national programme standards including laminar floors, among others,” Ashokan added.With the model code of conduct in place, authorities are expected to inform the election commission before starting work to avoid any issues, an official said.Besides Ganga Hospital, the GH is the only hospital dealing with severe and advanced burns treatment and management.
