The firm was also directed to repair the places dug up for the work,” a corporation official said.A source privy to the project said that workers have fixed leakages at four places and the remaining would be fixed in the night. “As both the main feeder pipelines and distribution pipelines pass through the road and the pipelines are decades old, when a leak is fixed at one point, the pipeline develop cracks at some other point,” he said.TOI had reported that there is a pothole in every 100m on the 3.2km stretch and most of them were formed after the leakages were repaired. The firm had fixed as many as 1,001 leakages in the 60 wards ever since it took over the work on February 15. Most of them were months old, a corporation source revealed. While the road is restored immediately after fixing the leakage on main roads and highly congested roads, on pocket roads, the dug portion is allowed to dry for a few days and a barricade with warning board is placed around it before restoring it.“By fixing the old leakages, as much as 98.7llt water was saved per month, which otherwise would have gone to waste,” the source said, adding that they have been receiving about 50 to 60 complaints about leaks a day.The workers are using leak detectors, which pick up the noise of water leakage and pinpoints the location, to identify the otherwise invisible leaks. “The detectors are used wherever water contamination complaint are reported. Using the device, the workers identified the source of water contamination at half a dozen areas including Puliyakulam, RS Puram and Thadagam Road.”The firm has deployed over 60 engineers and over 600 labourers exclusively for maintenance, the source added.
