Construction of flyover connecting Sungam to Ramanathapuram begins

It will be 30ft wide.Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that the project will be executed at a cost of Rs 213crore.A down ramp from the flyover at Sungam Junction to Sungam-Ukkadam Bypass will enable commuters to get down at Ukkadam without having to take the under flyover road.The department had floated a tender to carry out the construction work in February shortly after obtaining permission from the central government. At present, works to mark the exact location for erecting pillars on Trichy Road is going on and at a few marked points the road has been dug up to lay the foundation. The implementation period of the project is two years.It will have 110 pillars, a source with the department said. “We had conducted soil test for every 50 meters on the road and based on the results of the test, it has been decided to lay foundation at five meters deep. There will be a pillar for every 25m.”After the construction is finished, traffic congestion on the road is expected to come down drastically as over 70% of the commuters travel from places prior to Sungam and to Singanallur or beyond, as per the study conducted to analyse the traffic flow on Trichy Road.There was no need to acquire land for the project, sources said.To reduce traffic congestion at Nanjundapuram Road and Pankaja Mill Road, the department will have to construct ramps along the road, said K Kathirmathiyon of Coimbatore Consumer Cause. “But, a lot of land need to be acquired to construct the ramps at the junctions, which is difficult to do at this point of time for practical reasons.
