A month-long aggressive campaign of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, including roadshows by political parties, is now being considered as one of the main causes of the second wave of Covid -19.

Coimbatore district recorded 889 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Friday, an all-time high record for the highest single-day spike.

Fresh cases on Friday pushed the district`s active cases tally to 5,830.
The cumulative death toll stands at 710 after no deaths were recorded in the city on Friday.

The Covid-19 tally, meanwhile, zoomed past another grim milestone of 71,000-mark to 71,161 on the day. While 64,621 patients have recovered so far, the recovery rate has further dipped to 90.8% in the district, majorly because of the recent surge in cases.

Given that 9,971 samples were subjected to Covid-19 testing in the district as on Tuesday evening, the positivity rate stood at 8.9%.

Recently, a month-long aggressive campaign due to the assembly elections, including roadshows by political parties, is now being considered as one of the main causes of the second wave of Kovid infection. The fact is that the government machinery took steps to control the matter only after the voting was over.
