Coimbatore receives record 1566 cases amid vaccine shortage

The pace of Covid-19 vaccination in Coimbatore has slowed down drastically. Even those arriving to take the scheduled second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in many private hospitals and clinics of the state could not take the dose amid the shortage of vaccines.

Coimbatore district recorded 1566 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Monday, pushing the active cases tally to 8,188, while 1063 patients were discharged from treatment centres.

The cumulative death toll has reached 729 after three persons died of the disease. A 40-year-old man died and a 51-year-old man, who died after four days of hospitalization on Saturday due to bilateral bronchopneumonia at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, while a 72-year-old man also died at CMCH.

The recovery rate has, however, slipped to 89.2%. A total of 73,722 people have been recovered till date.

The fresh cases have taken the districts` Covid-19 tally over 82000-mark to reach 82,689.

Vaccine stocks dropped to 2,740 on Monday, with no doses in private hospitals and 30 in the district storage unit. Smaller GHs and PHCs had 2,310 doses. Numerous hospitals in the district, including Masonic Hospital, Gem Hospital, PSG Hospitals and Kovai Medical Center and Hospital stocks ran out on Sunday.
