Authorities of the temple Kamachipuri Adhyamana, built in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, have decided to make an idol of `Corona Devi` to save people from Covid 19 in the wake of the deadly second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Authorities of the temple Kamachipuri Adhyamana, built in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, have decided to make an idol of `Corona Devi` to save people from Covid 19 in the wake of the deadly second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Shivalingeswarar, in charge of Adhinam, said that to save people from plagues and many diseases, it has been the practice to make idols of deities.

However, the local authorities said that the people in the surrounding areas have been informed not to visit the temple as lockdown restrictions are enforced.

In Tamil Nadu, there are several such deities as for example, the Plague Mariamman Temple in Coimbatore. People believed that deities protected the citizens during the plague and cholera outbreak in the early 1900s. The temple has been set up in Kamatchipuram village on the outskirts of Coimbatore city. Kamachipuri Adhinam has decided to use granites to make the idol and perform special poojas for 48 days. During this Mahayagya will be organized, but the people will not be allowed to offer worship in the temple given the Covid-19 situation.

This is the second shrine that has come up for Corona Devi in South India. In June last year, a priest from Kadakkal in the Kollam district of Kerala had installed such an idol in a makeshift shrine that was attached to his house to ward off the fear of the virus.
