Coimbatore: A couple running a micro industrial unit attempted to immolate themselves in front of the district collectorate here on Tuesday as the duo was unable to repay loan taken from a moneylender, who along with his henchmen harassed them a day ago.U Biju, 44, and his wife Indu, 42, of Gandhi Maa Nagar here came to the district collectorate with kerosene. They doused themselves with kerosene and tried to set themselves ablaze. Seeing this, the police on duty at the collectorate foiled the bid, forcefully removed them from the spot and took them to the Race Course police station.Biju told reporters that he had borrowed money to construct a house but couldn't repay it on time. So, the moneylender sent 30 people to his house to threaten him. He subsequently lodged a case with the Saravanampatti police and the city police against the moneylender. But, no action was taken on his petitions.The police had allegedly foisted a false case against the couple and arrested them in March this year. The couple was lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison but they came out on bail. "I have a welding workshop and entered into a usury deal with a moneylender to expand the business and also to construct a house. I could not repay the amount with interest and the money lender often sent his henchmen to my house. Last month, they threw out the household articles. But, the police arrested me and my wife. How can the police intervene in a money dispute," Biju askedHe demanded action against the moneylender and the Saravanampatti police for foisting a false case against him and his wife.The police, meanwhile, released the couple with a stern warning not to stage suicide attempt in front of the district collectorate.
