Health department officials begin crackdown on quacks

Coimbatore: A 32-year-old man, who claimed to have got a medical degree from Russia that's equivalent to MBBS, was detained at Kulathupalayam in Coimbatore city for practicing without passing a screening test conducted by the Indian Medical Council (IMC).Another quack from Negamam near Pollachi managed to escape while the health department officials raided her clinic. However, later the officials sealed the clinic.In the first incident, S Kannan, joint director of medical and rural health services got a tip off and raided SP Clinic at Kulathupalayam here on Thursday. The health department officials detained S Arul, 32, a native of Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district for running a clinic from 2009."Arul told me that he had completed his medical degree in Russia and came to India in 2009. He appeared for the screening test conducted by the IMC, however didn't clear it. Hence he couldn't register his degree in India. Despite he wasn't eligible to practice medicine in the country, he ran the clinic for the last eight years," Kannan said.Kannan further said that Arul could not produce his medical degree certificate. He was handed over to the Kuniyamuthur police for further investigation. "We thoroughly checked his documents and confirmed that he pursued medical degree in Russia and his batch mates are working as doctors in few private hospitals in Coimbatore city. We did not arrest him and are discussing with the IMC officials for investigation," a police officer said.In the second incident, the health department officials raided a clinic at Negamam near Pollachi on Thursday afternoon. They questioned Muthulakshmi, 50 of Vadachitoor, who ran the clinic. She told the officials that she studied Ayurvedic medicine, but was practicing allopathic medicines. After the officials planned to produce her to the police, she managed to escape from their custody. Medicines and other equipment were seized from the clinic. Further investigation is on.
