Conference stresses need to tap renewable energy sources more

Coimbatore: Efforts towards sustainable living in India is still a baby crawling, but India will be able to reduce carbon emissions up to 30% by 2030, and at the same time achieve 220GW renewable energy production by 2022, Chitra Rajagopal, director general, systems and modelling, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) said.She was reiterating the thoughts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the international conference on renewable energy and sustainable development held at Dr Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology on Thursday.She said, "Humans have squandered the past 30 years." She felt that economy, society and environment are the three pillars of sustainable development. "People are more focused on economy and are not concerned about society and environment. An international organisation that will bring about this change in human attitude is the need of the hour," said Rajagopal.Ashok Pandey, an eminent scientist at the Centre of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing and founder president of the Biotech Research Society, India, chaired the conference. He said that by 2040, France will not have cars running on fossil fuels, and this will be a critical move.Vanitha Niranjan Thakkar, secretary general of Solar Energy Society of India, inaugurated the SWELECT training and research lab for photovoltaic modules at the Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology. "In the era of solar energy, the laboratory is much needed to carry out research in photovoltaic modules and in learning the working and applications of PV Modules," Thakkar said.Chairman of MCET M Manikam, who presided over the occasion, said Tamil Nadu stands second in industrial development.
