more-in It is over three years now that a few classes for the students of Government High School at Devarmalai in Bargur hills were being held in open ground due to absence of adequate classrooms. The middle school was upgraded as high school in 2011-12 that currently has 278 students and 12 teachers. However, due to infrastructure bottlenecks, three classes were taken in verandas and under the shades of the trees. The upgraded school totally needs 10 classrooms, rooms for laboratory, library and for office. The situation turns worse during rainy seasons as students have to be accommodated in the available classrooms making it inconvenient to other students. Also, during examinations, students face difficulty by sitting on the ground and writing. Under the NABARD funding, ? 1.68 crore was sanctioned for a new building near the school. But, identification of land for construction took over two years. The land was measured by a surveyor recently and boundaries were fixed for three sides while the boundary is yet to be fixed for one side. Sources said that after fixing the boundaries, the land will be handed over to the Public Works Department (PWD) for the construction work to begin. S.C. Natraj, Director of Sudar, an NGO, said that seven schools in the hilly areas in the district need additional classrooms that were upgraded in the past years. He urged the district administration to take steps in identifying the land and completing the construction process for these schools at the earliest so that sufferings of students are put to an end. Chief Educational Officer R. Balamurali told The Hindu that the land will be handed over to the PWD in the coming week and construction work will begin soon.
