more-in After the first renal transplantation performed in January this year, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) has completed 10 successful procedures in nine months. The recipients were from Coimbatore and the neighbouring districts. In all these cases, the kidneys came from liver donors. The Department of Nephrology is all set to perform the eleventh procedure in the coming days. Several kidney patients who claims to have donor are waiting for the approval of renal transplantation committee to undergo the procedure. It was on January 23, a 28-year-old man from Coonoor in the Nilgiris underwent the first renal transplantation performed at the hospital by a team of doctors headed by A. Prabhakaran, Head of the Department of Nephrology. According to Dr. Prabhakaran, all the kidney recipient are in good health and were coming for follow-up treatment. With the procedure covered under Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), several patients suffering from acute kidney failure are approaching CMCH for the procedure. As CMCH is yet to become an empanelled hospital of Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Programme, namely Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing (TNOS), patients who want to undergo renal transplantation will have to find an ideal match from a living donor and complete all legal requirements for the procedure. “It will take some time for the hospital to get empanelled under TNOS to be part of the common waiting list where registered patients get organ from deceased donor,” said R. Soundravel, resident medical officer, CMCH.
