Nallamani (87), a retired government school teacher, came all the way from Dharapuram to Tirupur Collectorate in an ambulance on Monday to petition Collector K.S. Palanisamy against the alleged harassment she and her family members face from a moneylender. Ms. Nallamani, accompanied by her daughter-in-law J. Jansi and grandson, pointed out in the petition that the lender had been demanding exorbitant interest on the principal amount which her son had borrowed in 2009 to meet the working capital needs in his business. Her son died recently and family was dependent on her pension. “My husband borrowed Rs. 15 lakh from the lender, who is also a lawyer. We repaid a portion of the amount. “But, suddenly the interest rates were hiked from the scale at which it was promised. “The lender is now asking us to pay Rs. 95 lakh claiming that huge interest has accrued on the principal amount”, Ms. Jansi told reporters. Ms. Nallamani and the kin further alleged that the title of their house documents, pledged to obtain the loan amount, had been changed to the lender’s name. “We have given a complaint earlier against the demand for exorbitant interests to Dharapuram police in 2013, but no action was taken. Along with the petition to the Collector, we have now produced audio and video footages to substantiate the allegations against the lender”, said Ms. Jansi.
