Coimbatore Day celebrated

Coimbatore was made a district and district headquarters on November 24, 1804 and the day is being observed as Coimbatore Day, say those familiar with the history of Coimbatore. To celebrate Coimbatore Day, which has come a little ahead of Coimbatore Vizha, The Hindu embarked on a day-long celebration at three different venues. The Coimbatore district trurned 213 on Friday. At the crack of dawn, The Hindu was ready with its volunteers at the Coimbatore Railway Junction and the Coimbatore International Airport to greet the passengers with chocolates, roses and Mangala Vadhyam.

At the crack of dawn, The Hindu was ready with its volunteers at the Coimbatore Railway Junction and the Coimbatore International Airport to greet the passengers with chocolates, roses and Mangala Vadhyam. Selfie kiosk The passengers at the railway junction took selfies at the ‘Selfie Kiosk’ established by The Hindu. The Hindu celebrated the Coimbatore Day in association with Jewel One and the event was supported by Fun Mall, A1 Chips, SSVM School of Excellence, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science and adequate support came from Airport Authority of India, Coimbatore and Southern Railway Salem Division. The evening event at Fun Mall began with a flash mob by Foot Loose Dance Academy and it was followed by music performances by Gurubrahma Academy of Light Music and Mouli’s Karaoke Club. The Hindu roped in the support of Coimbatore Corporation and CII-Yi as well. S. Srikumaravel, co-chair (health vertical), Young Indians,took part. The correspondent of National Model Schools, Mohan Chander, graced the occasion. The participants had a ‘meet and chat’ with Rajesh Govindarajulu, famous Historian on the culture of Coimbatore, and took a few free-wheeling quizzing to win attractive prizes.
