CUTTACK: A day after 170 people fell ill after consuming sharbat at Salipur block in the district, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Friday launched crackdown against 'sharbat' shops in the city.As temperature rises, hundreds of makeshift 'sharbat' and lassi shops start mushrooming in the Millennium city. To avoid a rerun of the Salipur incident in Cuttack, a special team of CMC conducted surprise raids on several 'sharbat' shops across the city and checked the ingredients used by them in making the cold drinks. The team conducted raids on at least 20 shops and examined the quality of water, ice, milk products used by them in making the 'sharbats'. The team found that many shops were using low quality food products and destroyed it. At least 70 kilos of ice, some chemicals used to give a refreshing and attractive look to the 'sharbat' were destroyed by the team.“Our motive behind the raids is to ensure that 'sharbat' shops use good quality water and food products. Use of any harmful product and contaminated water or ice may lead to outbreak of food poisoning and jaundice diseases,” said a member of the team. The CMC officials expressed concern as they found during the raid that many shops were using unhygienic and poor quality ice in the sharbat. A strict advisory has been issued to the sharbat stall owners to use appropriate quality products. “We will initiate strict action against the offenders. The raids will be conducted on a regular basis on the 'sharbat' stall and roadside food joints,” said CMC’s health officer, Sarat Dash.On the other hand, police have arrested Prabhakar Rout, from whose shop the people had consumed 'sharbat' during Shivratri celebrations in Raisunguda village and had fallen ill. Rout was arrested from Dhenkanal railway station while he was fleeing. He has been booked under section 328 of IPC.“We have collected samples of water, ice and flavors used by Rout in making the 'sharbat'. The samples have been sent to forensic laboratory for testing,” said inspector in charge of Salipur police station, P K Majhi.
