Orissa high court lawyers to go on hunger strike from Tuesday

CUTTACK: Lawyers of Orissa high court bar association will began hunger strike from Tuesday demanding filling up of the vacant lying posts of judges in the high court.“Along with hunger strike, the ceasework agitation will also continue. Lawyers will boycott court proceedings till February 23,” said secretary of high court bar association, Satyabrata Mohanty. The bar association have alleged that since 2015, there has been no appointment of judges in Orissa high court. Hence we were forced to launch the agitation,” said Mohanty.Meanwhile, litigants are suffering a lot due to the ceasework agitation of lawyers. He said that on February 23 a special meeting will be convened in which further course of action will be decided.Notably, the lawyers have launched ceasework agitation since February 12 against shortage of judges in high court.

There are only 16 judges against the sanctioned strength of 27 judges.“We have given several representations to the union law ministry praying them to fill up the vacant post of judges in high court. But all our appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Hence we were forced to launch the agitation,” said Mohanty.Meanwhile, litigants are suffering a lot due to the ceasework agitation of lawyers. “My brother’s bail plea was supposed to be heard on Monday but due to the cease-work of lawyers it could not be heard. My brother will have to languish in jail for some more days,” said Mayadhar Mallick , a litigant.
