Dengue returns to haunt Cuttack: 2 cases reported

CUTTACK: Dengue has again reared its ugly head in Cuttack. "The dengue patients are not residents of Cuttack but they have come to the city from outside after getting affected with the disease. At least two cases from Tulasipur and Jagatpur have been reported following which Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has started widespread awareness campaign against the disease in the city. "So far, we have not found any dengue breeding site in the city. But we are trying our best to complete the work at the earliest," said Mohapatra.CMC officials said stagnant water is the main cause of outbreak of dengue.

Hence there is nothing to worry about the situation. We have started massive cleanliness drive in the city," said CMC commissioner Bikash Mohapatra.The CMC authorities have directed Idco ( Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation), which owns Jagatpur industrial area, to intensify cleaning drive in the locality and clear dengue mosquito breeding grounds. Fogging and anti-larvae mosquito oil application have also be intensified in the area."According to directions of the collector, accredited social health activists (Ashas) will carry out door-to-door awareness campaign to sensitize people about dengue in Jagatpur and Tulasipur," said chairman of CMC's standing committee on health and sanitation Ranjan Biswal.Health officials and sanitation workers have been engaged in eliminating the sources of dengue-causing mosquitoes. "So far, we have not found any dengue breeding site in the city. Still, our entomologists have been visiting different wards in the city to trace the mosquitoes," said Biswal.Recently, a special meeting was convened under the chairmanship of collector Susanta Mohapatra to discuss dengue and malaria preparedness. The collector directed teachers to create awareness about dengue dos and don'ts during the morning assembly in schools.Adding to it, drain de-silting operation has also been expedited in the city. The major drains choked by garbage and silt are being cleaned. "Due to frequent rain, the de-silting work is getting affected. But we are trying our best to complete the work at the earliest," said Mohapatra.CMC officials said stagnant water is the main cause of outbreak of dengue. People are being told to pump out such stagnant water from their houses and surroundings.In SCB Medical College and Hospital's dengue ward, at least 15 patients from outside are undergoing treatment. Out of it, two patients have been admitted to ICU.
