PIL in Orissa HC seeking preservation of Konark temple

CUTTACK: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in Orissa high court seeking protection and preservation of the heritage site Konark sun temple A social worker Achutananda Swain has moved high court alleging that Archeological Survey of India(ASI) , state government and Puri administration has clearly failed in maintaining the structure properly. Tourists visiting the world famous site are seen having a tough time negotiating in the knee deep water while moving around the structure. Due to negligence of the authorities the heritage site is facing serious threat.The petitioner has alleged that with few lashes of rain the sun temple premises get submerged in rain water. Last week also the Konark Sun temple faced similar water logging situation but no measures were taken by the authorities to flush out the rainwater.The petitioner has alleged that water logging has become a perennial problem at the Konark Sun temple but the authorities have turned a blind eye towards it. “The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing next week,” said petitioner’s counsel, Antarjyami Swain.

Swain has alleged that absolutely nothing is being done by the authorities to resolve the problem and protect the structure.The petitioner has further alleged the water logging problem is not only disappointing the tourists but also posing a threat to the structure of the temple. The petitioner has urged high court to intervene in the matter and direct authorities to take appropriate measures to resolve the problem.Swain has pointed out that due to water logging the structure will subsequently become weak and even the magnificent artwork in the temple is also getting affected. The petitioner has prayed the court to take strong note of the situation and chalk out concrete measures for better upkeep of the temple.The petitioner has also prayed that there is an urgent need to develop a proper drainage system in and around the temple to ensure its protection.The ASI, Puri administration and state government have been made parties in the case. “The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing next week,” said petitioner’s counsel, Antarjyami Swain.
