Odisha: British era Kanika library waits repair work

“Kanika library is British era building and we have to chalk out a proper detail plan to carry out its repair work. “The library is closed for over a month now but authorities are in no hurry to start its repair work. The authorities this time should ensure quality work,” said Arundhati Mishra, another student.However, university authorities have claimed that they are taking measures to start repair work at the earliest. Hence, they were forced to close down the library for the time being.What has irked the students is delay in starting repair work of the historic library. “The library was repaired two years ago but due to poor work chunks of plaster are falling off from the ceiling.

CUTTACK: Ravenshaw University’s Kanika library , one of the oldest and biggest library in the state, has remained shut for over a month now, making access of academic books difficult for the students.The library’s dilapidated condition has turned a cause of concern for the university and to ensure safety of the students the authorities have shut it down. Officials said chunks of plaster from the ceiling are falling on the floor making it unsafe for the students. Hence, they were forced to close down the library for the time being.What has irked the students is delay in starting repair work of the historic library. “The library is closed for over a month now but authorities are in no hurry to start its repair work. We are facing problem as many students used reading room of the library to prepare for competitive examinations,” said Satya Das, a student.The students have alleged that due to low quality of work the condition of the library has turned so bad. “The library was repaired two years ago but due to poor work chunks of plaster are falling off from the ceiling. The authorities this time should ensure quality work,” said Arundhati Mishra, another student.However, university authorities have claimed that they are taking measures to start repair work at the earliest. “Kanika library is British era building and we have to chalk out a proper detail plan to carry out its repair work. We are in talks with different government agencies which have expertise in carrying out repair work of such old heritage structures,” said registrar of the university, Maheswar Agasti.Established in 1922, Kanika library has been named after the Raja Sahib of Kanika Sri Rajendra Narayan Bhanjadeo, who donated money for construction of the library. Spread over an area of 9,000 square feet, it is one of the largest libraries in the state. The library has a rich collection of thousands of rare books.
