Odisha, C'garh officials meet over Mahanadi

Sanjaya Bhagwat, who is chief engineer of the Mahanadi Project at Raipur in Chhattisgarh said the discussion was held on the dam safety of the Mahanadi basin. "This apart, it is also essential for us to know the information on inflow and outflow of water from the dams for proper management of water in Odisha," he added.Information regarding dam and water management of Odisha is shared with our counterparts in Chhattisgarh, he said.

SAMBALPUR: Amid the raging feud between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the Mahanadi river, authorities of the water resources department of both the state governments held a meeting at Burla on Friday.Though a similar meeting is held annually, more significance is being attached to it this time because of the ongoing row that has intensified in the past year, leading to the matter now being treated by a tribunal ordered by the Supreme Court for the purpose.Chief engineer of the upper Mahanadi basin, Jyotirmaya Rath said the meeting of the interstate sub-committee of the National Committee on Dam Safety (NCDS) for the Mahanadi river system was intended to monitor the safety aspect of interstate dams in Mahanadi basin and is held every year."Last year, the meeting was held at Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is a coordination meeting and very important for both the states," said Rath.The health status and the standard operating procedure (SOP) of all major dams and medium reservoirs in the upstream of the Hirakud dam is discussed. "Data on rainfall, water levels and inflow and outflow discharges of all the major and medium reservoirs in Chhattisgarh were discussed in the meeting," he added.He said there are some dams, including two major projects - the Ravishankar and Bango - on the upstream of the Hirakud Dam Reservoir whose health conditions it is essential to know.
