Nine victims have approached us with similar complaints. We’re calling it SIM Swipe as in each case, the number remained the same, but the SIM was changed.”In a recent case, taken by assistant police inspector,, a 60-year--old man received a call from the unknown number. The caller claimed he was a customer care representative of the network provider and told the victim that his SIM could be easily upgraded from 3G to 4G. As the victim agreed to continue with the offer, the fraudster told him to check his messages. He was told he would receive a text to he was to reply by pressing the number ‘1.’ After this call, the victim’s number was shut down. He didn’t even understand the fraud till he checked his bank statements and realised he had lost Rs 1 lakh.In another case that took place in March, the victim got a similar call on the contact number he had registered with banks. He was asked to register his Aadhaar number and to dial ‘1’. Though his number was also discontinued, he informed his family members and immediately approached the bank and changed the registered number.Gavate explained, “In a few cases, the SIM has been changed, but no financial frauds done. We are also investigating such cases.”Shende added, “The scamsters are making the customer apply for a new SIM and the victim unknowingly accepts the request. The numbers which being used to commit the fraud have registered in.”So far, cops have not traced the scamsters, but are hoping to get clues which will lead them to the accused.
