2 cops held, but lawyers refuse to relent

They are pressuring the police department and government to initiate action against the innocent constables by paralyzing the functioning of courts across the state. We will decide our next course of action after consulting our seniors," said Satosh Satpathy, president of the Mahasangh.The litigants have been the worst hit in the ongoing cease-work of the lawyers. They will decide upon their future course of action on Friday.Meanwhile, the Odisha Constable, Havildar and sepoy Mahasangh too on Wednesday raised their voice on the issue.

CUTTACK: Lawyers in Cuttack , who have been on a cease-work agitation since August 29 to protest against the alleged police assault on one of their colleagues, have threatened to continue their stir till their demands are met with.This despite the arrests of two of the accused in the case by the Crime Branch on Tuesday night.The lawyers' association on Wednesday alleged that the Crime Branch sleuths had arrested only a home guard and an individual involved in the case, while the three constables who had allegedly assaulted the lawyer at Nuabazaar on August 28 are still roaming free.Satyabrata Mohanty, secretary of Orissa high court bar association, said, "The manner in which two of the five accused were arrested and granted bail immediately by a local court raises questions about the intention of the police. The state police and Crime Branch are clearly protecting the constables involved in the crime by not initiating any action against them." He threatened to agitate till Friday. The annual general meeting of the Orissa high court bar association is scheduled to be held on the day.The lawyers had on Tuesday too picketed outside government offices in Cuttack inconveniencing employees of subordinate courts, collector office, sub-collector office who were not able to enter their offices.However, the lawyers' association has postponed its plan to gherao the chief minister's residence on Thursday. They will decide upon their future course of action on Friday.Meanwhile, the Odisha Constable, Havildar and sepoy Mahasangh too on Wednesday raised their voice on the issue.
