Supreme Court directs Odisha lawyers to call off ceasework

CUTTACK: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the agitating lawyers of Orissa high court and subordinate courts to call off their ongoing month long cease-work agitation and resume court work.After getting a copy of the order of the Supreme Court through registrar general of Orissa high court, the high court association has called an emergency meeting on Friday 9.30 am to decide its further course of action. An emergency meeting has been called tomorrow in this regard,” said secretary of high court bar association, Satyabrata Mohanty. Meanwhile, the Supreme court also asked the lawyers to resume their work so that litigants like Mitra can get their right of access to justice. “We have received the Supreme Court’s order asking us to resume court work so that no impediment is caused in the right of access to justice to any litigant. Sources said the lawyers would likely resume their work from Friday.The lawyers of Orissa high court and subordinate courts are on cease work since August 29 after one of their colleagues was allegedly assaulted by few police personnel on August 28 at Nuabazaar.

Demanding arrested of the erring police personnel; the lawyers have paralysed court proceedings since August 29.The Apex court intervened in the matter while hearing to the petition filed by one Abhijit Iyer Mitra, against whom the Odisha police have lodged a case for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Konark temple. He was arrested and later granted interim relief by chief metropolitan magistrate, Saket recently. However, he moved Supreme Court on Thursday for bail relief on the ground that as the Orissa high court is not functioning due to lawyers’ strike he was compelled to file his petition in the apex court.Taking note of the issue, the Supreme Court ordered director general of police, Odisha to handover investigation of the police-lawyers rift incident to the inspector general (IG) of crime branch, who will probe the matter with sincerity and objectivity. Meanwhile, the Supreme court also asked the lawyers to resume their work so that litigants like Mitra can get their right of access to justice.
