Ravenshaw University to become disabled-friendly

Besides, we all have plans to distribute the latest sticks and disabled friendly laptops to blind students. Police suspected that the blind students accidentally fell off from the rooftop. Even access to the rooftop of hostels will be prohibited for students.To ensure the safety and security of disabled students, especially blind students, a separate register will be maintained in all hostels. Protesting the death of the blind student, many students on Friday had staged agitation demanding to make the campus safe for blind and disabled students.Sources said over 250 disabled students study in the varsity.

CUTTACK: Two days after a partially blind student of Ravenshaw University died after falling from a rooftop of one of the hostel building, the university authorities have chalked out a blueprint to make the campus disabled-friendly.The vice-chancellor of the varsity, Ishan Patro on Saturday said that a special committee has been formed which will look into the problems of the differently-abled students in the campus and provide necessary suggestions to the varsity. Prashant Bhuyan, president of Odisha Blind Association has been appointed as the head of the committee.Besides, the varsity has also decided to install CCTV cameras at all essential points, including the rooftops in the hostels. Presently, there are CCTV cameras in few departments and at the entry and exit gates. However, to keep a tab on the movement of the disabled students and to avoid any untoward incident in future, the authorities have decided to install closed circuit cameras in hostel premises and rooftops of the building. The CCTVs will be monitored by the wardens of the hostels. Even access to the rooftop of hostels will be prohibited for students.To ensure the safety and security of disabled students, especially blind students, a separate register will be maintained in all hostels. Whenever the disabled students will have to fill in the details like they are going with whom and within how much they will return back. “The register will help us to trace our disabled students if they face any problem,” said an official of the varsity.The varsity authorities will also write letters to the state government and University Grants Commission(UGC) seeking funds to make the campus barrier free. “We have built ramps in some areas but to make the entire campus barrier free and disabled friendly we need more money. Besides, we all have plans to distribute the latest sticks and disabled friendly laptops to blind students. To execute the plans, we will seek funds from state government and UGC,” said Patro.Notably, on September 27 a partially blind PhD student of the Ravenshaw University died after falling off the rooftop of the New hostel building. The deceased was identified as Kusadhar Bag of Balangir district. Police suspected that the blind students accidentally fell off from the rooftop. Protesting the death of the blind student, many students on Friday had staged agitation demanding to make the campus safe for blind and disabled students.Sources said over 250 disabled students study in the varsity.
