Cold wave continues no early respite predicts IMD

BHUBANESWAR: There was no respite from cold in the state as 18 places recorded temperatures below 10 degree Celsius. Sahu, the former director of regional IMD centre here, said intense cold prevailed in the state for successive days as dry cold wind blew from northern region.On Tuesday, Koraput at 4.5 degree Celsius recorded highest seven degree Celsius fall from normal. Director of Centre for Environment and Climate of SOA University in the city Sarat Chandra Sahu said night temperature would witness a minor rise in the state next week. Railways stations and night shelters in the city and other places also saw rush of poor people. People at many places, mostly in interior pockets, preferred to remain indoors while roads and market places wore deserted look as evening approached.

Daringbadi, Phulbani and its nearby places witnessed frost for successive days amid lowest temperature being recorded at Daringbadi at 4 degree Celsius.The IMD forecast said similar trend with minor fluctuations will continue this week.A senior meteorologist, Sudarsan Mishra, at IMD centre here said severe cold wave warning has been sounded in hilly and remote pockets on Wednesday. The other places recording major fall in night temperature are Keonjhargarh (6.4 deg C), Angul ( 6.6 deg C), Bhawanipatna ( 7 deg C) and Sambalpur ( 7.8 deg C).The twin cities — Bhubaneswar and Cuttack — were shivering at 9.5 and 9.4 degree Celsius respectively.Severe cold continued to affect lives across the state. People at many places, mostly in interior pockets, preferred to remain indoors while roads and market places wore deserted look as evening approached. Many people sat around bonfires to keep themselves warm. Railways stations and night shelters in the city and other places also saw rush of poor people. “Intense cold in last three days delayed my morning walk and yoga class,” said Ayushman Hota, a teacher in the city.Intense cold at Daringbadi increased tourist footfall in the area, said an official source.
