MLAs meet Naveen over HC bench demand in W Odisha

BHUBANESWAR/CUTTACK: Amid mounting protests over the demand to establish permanent bench of Orissa high court in western region, a group of legislators, cutting across party lines, met chief minister Naveen Patnaik at his residence here on Friday. Sambalpur BJD legislator Rasheswari Panigrahi said they will seek prior permission and come to meet the chief justice soon.We had come to present our grievance related to the establishment of separate high court bench in Western Odisha . We were not given time as a sitting of the full court of high court was on, Das told reporters in Cuttack Sambalpur BJD legislator Rasheswari Panigrahi said they will seek prior permission and come to meet the chief justice soon to urge him to give his opinion to the Central government on the state governments proposal for establishment of bench.The state government on Wednesday appealed the agitating outfits to call off the agitations as courts in Sambalpur are closed since last September 15 while government offices are closed since November 19, 2018 in view of the protest. They sought Naveen’s intervention.Informing about the meeting, Jharsuguda Congress legislator Naba Das said, “The chief minister assured to take up the issue with the Centre.” The meeting lasted 10 minutes.“We have requested the chief minister to intervene and to invite all the bar associations of the regions for an amicable solution to the issue,” Das said.The senior Congress leader said the agitation will be intensified if the state government does not intervene.On September 5, Naveen had written a letter to Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad , requesting him to expedite the formal process for setting up the high court benches in western and southern regions.The Union law minister, in response ,asked to submit a comprehensive proposal in consultation with and consent of the chief justice of Orissa high court for further action.Earlier, the MLAs failed in their attempt to meet the chief justice of Orissa high court over the issue as they had not sought prior permission.
