Govt to soon begin survey on sewage disposal in Cuttack

The objective of the survey is to collect data for making the sewerage system functional. The STP started functioning on December 5 last year, including about 5000 connections in Markatnagar. "The process of connecting sewage lines to households has started in Bidanasi area. While one new 10 mld STP is being set up, another existing 33 mld STP is being restructured and refurbished. Each of them has an engineer and a personnel for survey and digitization of data of every household.

CUTTACK: The Odisha Water Supply & Sewerage Board (OWSSB) has started a survey of the home sewage disposal situation in Cuttack city.The OWSSB is implementing the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded integrated sanitation project for a comprehensive sewerage system to ensure the collection and disposal of waste water for the first time in the city. The objective of the survey is to collect data for making the sewerage system functional. Once the door-to-door survey is completed, residents will be able to connect their home sewage disposal systems to the main sewer lines, constructed outside, under the project.OWSSB chief engineer and JICA project in-charge Basanta Kumar Parida said, "The survey is essentially a feasibility study to facilitate connections for the houses. So we appeal to the people to cooperate with the surveyors who will visit their areas." He added, "We have constituted a 40-member team for the house-to-house survey. Each of them has an engineer and a personnel for survey and digitization of data of every household."The Rs 810.83 crore mega-project envisages a sewage system with a 384 underground gravity sewer line, 36 pumping stations and three sewage treatment plants (STPs).Officials said work on 277km sewer line has been completed, seven pump houses have been commissioned and first of the three STPs have been commissioned near Satichaura. The STP started functioning on December 5 last year, including about 5000 connections in Markatnagar."The process of connecting sewage lines to households has started in Bidanasi area. A target of covering 65,000 households across the city has been set," Parida told TOI. He added that people would have to fill up forms for approval to get their lines connected to the main sewer line.The facility is being extended free of cost. People will have to pay only for the sewer line needed on their premises to connect it to the main sewer line outside, Parida added.Official sources said about 40,000 households will be linked to the 36 million litre per day (mld) capacity STP at Satichaura.The remaining 25,000 households in the eastern part of the city will be linked to the other two STPs that are nearing completion at Matagajpur. While one new 10 mld STP is being set up, another existing 33 mld STP is being restructured and refurbished.
