Elections in state bar associations today

CUTTACK: All the bar associations affiliated to the Odisha State Bar Council (OSBC) will hold their elections on Saturday. This will be the first time elections of all bar associations in the state will be held on a single day. "All bar associations are expected to hold the elections on the basis of the voters list provided by the Bar Council without alteration," Samantasinghar said.On February 24, the OSBC had passed a resolution to implement the 'one bar, one vote' rule for elections by all the associations of the state, including that of the high court bar association. There are 167 bar associations in the state. The OSBC is the apex statutory body for these bar associations which are affiliated to it.

The OSBC is the apex statutory body for these bar associations which are affiliated to it."Elections in all bar associations will be held on one day, Saturday, as part of the implementation of 'one bar, one vote' for lawyers enrolled in the bar associations across the state," OSBC secretary J K Samantasinghar said.The 'one bar, one vote' rule is part of a guideline set by the Supreme Court in 2015 to identify the number of genuine advocates practising in various courts across the country. The rule, while allowing a number of memberships of various bars, gives only one voting right to an advocate.The OSBC secretary said all bar associations in the state have been provided with their respective voters' list, indicating the individual advocate's choice of bar to take part in the annual elections to form its executive body."All bar associations are expected to hold the elections on the basis of the voters list provided by the Bar Council without alteration," Samantasinghar said.On February 24, the OSBC had passed a resolution to implement the 'one bar, one vote' rule for elections by all the associations of the state, including that of the high court bar association.
