Cyber crime syndicate busted in Odisha`s Cuttack, Police arrests 7 seizes 16000 sims

An alleged cybercrime syndicate has been busted in Odisha`s Cuttack; seven people have been arrested and more than 16,000 SIM cards have been recovered from these people.

According to reports, 150 mobile phones have also been seized by the Odisha Police. These accused used to provide pre-activated SIMs to cyber criminals outside the state.

The members of the racket used to pass these SIM cards to the criminals with the help of private telecom personnel.

Giving information to the media, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner, SK Priyadarshi said, “A cybercrime syndicate was busted with the arrest of 7 people including two service providers, who were already making active SIMs. And sending them outside the state in exchange for money. 16,000 SIMs were recovered. These SIMs were created using fake IDs."

Most cybercriminals use pre-activated SIM cards as they are obtained through fake documents and those who are using them cannot be tracked. Usually, a sim that the accused used to activate the SIM through fake ID.

Fraudsters get information about your banking account and registered mobile number through phishing, Trojan or malware; they use mobile SMS or email for this. Many times they also trick people by sending messages on social media. Very attractive gifts are also offered through SMS and email. One should avoid giving their personal information like date of birth, bank account number, Aadhaar number etc. on any unknown call.
