BERHAMPUR: A 17-year-old girl, whose marriage was stopped in Kandhamal's K Nuagaon on March 3, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the house of the man whom she was supposed to marry at Shalaguda in the same district on Monday.On Tuesday, officials of the district administration along with child rights activists visited the village to inquire into the circumstances that led her to the man's house and take the extreme step. Tulasi Sahu, a Plus II student of K Nuagaon, allegedly killed herself when Chandan Behera, 22, the prospective groom and his family were away.Later, they broke open the door and took her to hospital, where doctors declared her dead, said sub-divisional police officer (Phulbani) S N Murmu.On March 3, both Tulasi and Chandan's parents had agreed to marry them after the girl attains 18 years of age on the advice of officials and child right activists. The parents had also given an undertaking which was with the district child protection officer, said director, Childline, Rabindra Kumar Panda.When the marriage was stopped, the girl appeared very happy, said district child protection officer Rasmita Karana , who along with the Childline activists, child development project officer (Nuagaon) Drupadi Kanhar and police officers visited the spot of suicide and her parent's house on Tuesday."We will hand over the undertaking papers to police for necessary action," said Karana.During the inquiry, we came to know that Chandan had taken her to his house on April 14, she said."We will lodge a police complaint against the parents as they have violated the undertaking," added Panda. He said we will inquire whether her parents forced her to marry Chandan.
