CUTTACK: Tension prevailed at the council meeting of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Friday after Congress corporators were engaged in heated exchange of words with BJD corporators over lack of development activities in the city.Congress corporators alleged that development activities have taken a back seat in the city. Many development projects were announced like installation of LED street lights, repair of roads and improvement of sanitation in the city. But the ruling BJD is doing nothing, alleged Congress corporator Giribala Behera.Situation is so bad that even roads in the city are not being swept properly. Heaps of garbage can be seen in the lanes across the city. Even the drainage system is in a shambles, said Behera.The Congress corporators accused CMC authorities of showing undue favour to the wards of BJD corporators. "A sum of Rs 70 lakhs has been provided for road and drain construction to ward 24, which has a BJD corporator, without discussing the matter with other corporators. We want a vigilance probe into the matter," added Giribala.However, BJD corporators refuted the allegations. "Rs 70 lakh has not been allocated to any ward illegally. After examining the proposal for road and drain construction, it has been decided to allot the money to ward 24," said mayor Meenakshi Behera.The mayor said for immediate repair of drains and roads Rs 50 lakh will be allocated to each of the 59 wards.
