OHRC to Odisha Govt: Pay 4 lakh compensation for boy's death

The petitioner alleged that as November 23, 2015 was a Monday in the month of Kartik, many devotees had gone there to take a bath at the holy spot. And yet the administration had not taken adequate security measures to avoid untoward incident.The petitioner alleged that not a single life guard, life saving boat or fire brigade official was deployed at the site. CUTTACK: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of a teenager who had drowned in the sea in Ganjam two years back.The deceased's family had moved the OHRC alleging that their son died due to negligence of the state government and district administration. The petitioner had alleged that Sai Jaga Dalei , a student of Plus III science, had gone to Baba Bateswar Pitha in Ganjam with his relatives for picnic on November 23, 2015.The place is a major tourist spot and attracts hordes of devotees in the holy month of Kartik. "Due to the negligence of the administration, Sai met with an untimely death," the petition claimed, stating that if the administration had deployed security personnel then the life of the teenager could have been saved.The commission had sought reports from the police and the administration and found the allegations to be true.While disposing of the petition, the commission observed that because of the state's inaction, precious life of a budding student was lost in the sea.
