Orissa HC seeks report on fake appointments by Cuttack civic body

CUTTACK: Orissa High Court on Monday asked the crime branch to submit its investigation report in connection with the fake appointments at Cuttack Municipal Corporation CMC ).Division bench of Chief Justice Vineet Saran and Justice B R Sarangi has directed the state crime branch to submit its detail probe report related to the job scam within two weeks. The fake appointments were in the categories of sweepers, road gangs, drain gang, de-weeding coolies and teachers.Subsequently, a Cuttack based senior journalist Pradip Kumar Sahu in 2003 had moved court seeking CBI probe into the matter as the state exchequer sustained huge losses due to the job scam. The petitioner had alleged that in connivance with some employees of CMC, the racket operators had carried out the scam.Later in 2008, the Crime Branch had taken up investigation of the case in pursuance of a high court order following media reports about a sarpanch allegedly drawing salary from CMC as a fourth grade employee.

"The court has also asked CMC authorities to file a detail report about action taken by them in the fake appointment matter so far," said the petitioner Pradip Sahu.The job scam had rocked the CMC after it came to light in 2003 that around 274 employees were appointed illegally and drawing salaries since 1998 from the civic body without any valid appointment. The fake appointments were in the categories of sweepers, road gangs, drain gang, de-weeding coolies and teachers.Subsequently, a Cuttack based senior journalist Pradip Kumar Sahu in 2003 had moved court seeking CBI probe into the matter as the state exchequer sustained huge losses due to the job scam.
