Court dismiss discharge petition of Abdul Rehman

CUTTACK: The Cuttack district and sessions judge court on Wednesday rejected the discharge petition filed by suspected operative of al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent ( AQIS ), Abdul Rehman , who was arrested from Cuttack in 2015.Rehman ad opposed the sections leveled against him by the crime branch in chargesheet. Rehman, a cleric, used to run a madrassa in Jagatpur where over 100 poor children from Jharkhand and Bihar studied.Crime branch's special task force subsequently investigated into the terror activities of Rehman in Odisha and had submitted a detailed chargesheet against him.

He had prayed the court to drop and discharge the sections as no concrete evidence has been found against him. He had cited that the crime branch in its charge-sheet has imposed section 16(terrorist act), 17(raising funds for terrorist act) ,18 B(recruiting person for terrorist act) and 21(holding proceeds of terrorist act) of Unlawful Activities(prevention ) Act against him.But there were no evidence against him for any prosecution and hence the charges should be dropped.However, the court dismissed the petition and framed charges against him. "Rehman was charged for sedition and involvement in illegal activities," said a counsel involved in the case. The court will conduct the next hearing in the case on October 24.Notably, a team of Delhi and Odisha police had arrested Rehman from Jagatpur in December 2015 for his alleged links with the terror organization. Delhi police had nabbed him on charges of facilitating terror activities.
