CUTTACK: In a shocking incident, a woman delivered a baby girl on the verandah of district headquarters hospital here, popularly known as City hospital , after doctor allegedly denied her admission. The victim Gulsan Biwi (22), a resident of Dagarpada, had arrived at the hospital at 7.30 am after suffering from labour pain . After writhing in pain for four long hours, Gulsan delivered a baby at 11.30 am on verandah of the hospital.Narrating Gulsan's suffering her sister-in-law, Shabina Begum alleged that the doctor was hesitant in attending the patient. "After a lot of pleading, the doctor asked us to perform ultrasound of the patient and demanded Rs 1000 from us. As we had no money, we performed the ultrasound at a private set up and again came to the hospital to show the reports. But this time also the doctor did not respond," said Shabina."I appealed the doctor to attend the patient as she was in severe pain, unable to walk and waiting in verandah at the entrance of the hospital. But the doctor did not come and instead told us to go to SCB Medical College and Hospital as it was a case of caesarean delivery," alleged Shabina."By the time I came after showing the reports to doctor, my bhabhi(sister-in law) had already delivered the baby on the verandah. After the incident, tension flared up as other patients and attendants started shouting following which few nurses came and took my bhabhi and her baby to the labour room," added Shabina. Health condition of both the mother and the baby is fine now. However, hospital's doctors have refuted the allegations. "The ultrasound report suggested it was a case of caesarean. Our doctors were planning to do the case, when the patient allegedly delivered the baby at the entrance," said a doctor on condition of anonymity.Meanwhile, chief district medical officer (CDMO) Biswa Kalyan Patnaik has ordered a probe into the incident. "A team of doctors will probe the matter and submit report within seven days," said Patnaik. The incident triggered severe resentment among the citizens of Millennium city. "If this is the situation of poor patients in a city like Cuttack then just imagine plight of patients in interior and tribal areas," said Madhusudan Rout, a lawyer.
