Green panel seals 4 polluting hotels

The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on Saturday sealed four hotels in Rourkela for flouting pollution control norms, while five hotels in Bhubaneswar are on the pollution panel's radar. Officials said the hotels did not have sewerage treatment plant (STP) to treat waste water generated in hotel rooms, kitchen and restaurants. All rooms of the hotels have been sealed," said B R Rath , tehesildar, Rourkela.Meanwhile, the green panel has listed five hotels in Bhubaneswar for not paying the mandatory pollution charge, otherwise called as environmental compensation. "The regional office of OSPCB had conducted an inspection before taking the decision to seal the hotels. The Sundargarh district administration and OSPCB officials jointly carried out the sealing exercise in Rourkela.Another hotel facing closure got a stay order from Odisha high court.

The Sundargarh district administration and OSPCB officials jointly carried out the sealing exercise in Rourkela.Another hotel facing closure got a stay order from Odisha high court. The sealing was done following direction from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Officials said the hotels did not have sewerage treatment plant (STP) to treat waste water generated in hotel rooms, kitchen and restaurants. "The regional office of OSPCB had conducted an inspection before taking the decision to seal the hotels. All rooms of the hotels have been sealed," said B R Rath , tehesildar, Rourkela.Meanwhile, the green panel has listed five hotels in Bhubaneswar for not paying the mandatory pollution charge, otherwise called as environmental compensation. Pollution charge of Rs 1 lakh would be collected from the hotels which did not take the yearly consent certificate to operate the esrablishment till the August 6, 2015 cut-off date as fixed by the NGT.
