Koraput gang-rape survivor critical, shifted to ICU

CUTTACK: The minor girl, who was allegedly gang-raped by four men in fatigues in Koraput in October, was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Monday after her condition deteriorated.The girl was rushed from a hospital in Koraput to SCB here on Saturday night after she threw up blood. Since there was no improvement in her condition, she was shifted to the ICU of the medicine department . Doctors treating the girl suspect that she tried to commit suicide by consuming over a dozen iron pills."The girl had told us that she had taken 10 to 12 iron tablets following which she started vomiting blood. But she has not disclosed as to why she took so many tablets," said Dr Sri Prasad Mohanty. She has stopped vomiting blood, but her condition is still worrisome. "We will conduct an endoscopy on Tuesday to find out the exact cause behind her condition and ascertain the extent of damage," he added.The SCB authorities have formed an 11-member team, comprising doctors of medicine neurology , gynaecology, gastroenterology, nephrology, haematology, psychiatry and cardiology departments to ensure the best treatment for the rape survivor."The team has been continuously monitoring the condition of the girl. The entire treatment will be provided to her free of cost," said superintendent of SCB, Shyama Kanungo.As the girl is not in a proper state of mind, a psychiatrist has been roped in to examine her condition and counsel her. "Once she is stable, our psychiatrists will talk to her," said a doctor.Notably, the girl studying in Class IX at Kunduli village in Koraput district, was allegedly gang-raped by four men on October 10 while returning from school. A case was also registered in this regard. She was kept in a government-run residential school by the administration following the incident. But on Saturday, she complained of illness following which she was admitted to a hospital in Koraput and later shifted to Cuttack.
