NAINITAL: Leader of Opposition, Indira Hridayesh, on Tuesday handed over an amount of Rs 7.25 lakh as financial aid to the family of deceased transporter Prakash Pandey. The family members had earlier threatened to commit self-immolation if the state government fails to provide financial aid to the family.“We will try to provide more help including financial to the family. We will also make efforts to help the family members in getting a job. Since, the government backed out of the promise it made to the helpless family we decided to step up,” said 75-year-old Congress MLA from Haldwani refusing to divulge details of her contribution in the amount.Pandey had died after consuming poison in front of state agriculture minister Subodh Uniyal who was holding a janta darbar programme at the party headquarters in Dehradun.Meanwhile, the family members also decided to call off their protest and self-immolation bid after request from Hridayesh. “She did everything to help us and requested us to end the protest. I thank her from bottom of my heart and will remain indebted to her for life. She helped us when the government abandoned us,” said Kamla Pandey, aggrieved wife of Pandey. She sat on protest which her father- and mother-in-law in Haldwani on February 16.
