Water rationing in Nainital to save Naini lake leaves many homes thirsting for water

“It has been almost a week that we have not received a single drop of water from the supply line. Sunil Tiwari, executive engineer, Jal Sansthan said, "We are planning to increase the duration of supply and trouble shooting mechanisms are also ongoing to improve the water delivery mechanism." We have been forced to fetch water from the adjacent natural spring. Even the pumps are old and fail to supply water within the 3-hour period when the supply is released.”Officials of the Jal Sansthan, the body responsible for distribution of water in the city said that they are trying to solve the problem at the earliest. NAINITAL: A water rationing system implemented in January to save Naini lake – the main source of water for Nainital – has left around 600 families in the lake town almost without water.Ever since the measure was implemented after a drastic dip was registered in Naini lake’s levels, the families who stay in the higher reaches of the town — in areas like Snow View, Hill Number Seven, Birla Road and Mallital — say they are receiving negligible water supply as pumps cannot transport the low flow of water to their homes.

NAINITAL: A water rationing system implemented in January to save Naini lake – the main source of water for Nainital – has left around 600 families in the lake town almost without water.Ever since the measure was implemented after a drastic dip was registered in Naini lake’s levels, the families who stay in the higher reaches of the town — in areas like Snow View, Hill Number Seven, Birla Road and Mallital — say they are receiving negligible water supply as pumps cannot transport the low flow of water to their homes. “It has been almost a week that we have not received a single drop of water from the supply line. We have been forced to fetch water from the adjacent natural spring. It has made our lives difficult climbing back and forth in the hilly terrain,” said Shobha Sah, 62, a resident of the Sher ka Danda area.The rationing system which is usually put in place during summer was implemented for the first time in winter last year. Water supply was limited to only three hours each morning and evening as part of the rationing.Manoj Joshi, a resident of Mallital said, "The situation has become such that we are forced to buy drinking water for the past several days.” He added that “the rationing system has been implemented without proper planning.” “Most of the pipelines in the town are old.
