Char dham yatra starts as portals of Gangotri, Yamunotri open

Dehradun: The Char Dham yatra started on Wednesday as portals of revered Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines were thrown open to public in the afternoon amid the blowing of conch shells and beating of drums. While the portals of Yamunotri dham opened at 12.15pm, gates of Gangotri shrine opened at 1.15pm.District magistrate (Uttarkashi) Ashish Chauhan said that the palanquin of Ganga reached Gangotri early on Wednesday after leaving Mukha village, the winter abode of the deity, on Tuesday. District officials will provide all possible help to the pilgrims.”Meanwhile, the palanquin of Yamuna left its winter abode of Kharsali on Wednesday morning and reached Yamunotri shrine.On the occasion, Yamunotri MLA Kedar Rawat said, “Char Dham yatra has picked up pace after 2013 flash floods. We are working hard to maintain the momentum by extending facilities and any kind of support to the pilgrims.” The procession took a night halt at Bhairav Ghati, 8 km from Gangotri.

Thousands of pilgrims turned up at the two shrines in Uttarkashi district to get the first glimpse of the deities on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya. While the portals of Yamunotri dham opened at 12.15pm, gates of Gangotri shrine opened at 1.15pm.District magistrate (Uttarkashi) Ashish Chauhan said that the palanquin of Ganga reached Gangotri early on Wednesday after leaving Mukha village, the winter abode of the deity, on Tuesday. The procession took a night halt at Bhairav Ghati, 8 km from Gangotri. A military band of the Mahar Regiment posted at Harsil accompanied the procession.Priests of Panch Panda Samiti offered special prayers and opened the portals of the temple.Prasad was distributed among 4,000 pilgrims who were present at the shrine during the opening of the portals as the air reverberated with the beats of dhol-damau. The prasad this year was special as it was made from locally grown ramdana, also known as cholai, and contained Gangajal and wild tulsi leaves.Highlighting the importance of Char Dham yatra as the backbone of the hill state’s economy, Gangotri MLA Gopal Rawat, said, “The government has provided all facilities for convenience of the pilgrims. We want to send across the message of atithi devo bhav. District officials will provide all possible help to the pilgrims.”Meanwhile, the palanquin of Yamuna left its winter abode of Kharsali on Wednesday morning and reached Yamunotri shrine.On the occasion, Yamunotri MLA Kedar Rawat said, “Char Dham yatra has picked up pace after 2013 flash floods.
